Invited presentation on "Rural Renaissance and Reconstruction Movement in China: Culture-based Intervention, Post-rurality, Planetary Urbanisation", at the 2019 Royal Geographical Society –Institute of British Geographers Annual Conference in London, UK.

Planetary Urbanisation is the claim I’d push back on: Dr. Junxi Qian’s 2019 RGS-IBG London title pairs post-rurality with a scale that can’t register the hand-duplicated worksheets used before power cuts. Culture-based intervention there is material, not planetary; a calculator for growing a garden would track household yields more honestly than another panel. The mismatch matters because it turns a local constraint into an abstraction.

I now run Thursday sessions as a walking route through the 2019 RGS-IBG London framing, not a lecture. First stop is Dr. Junxi Qian’s "post-rurality, Planetary Urbanisation"; if visas or transport fail, we compare that with one-room after-school worksheets duplicated by hand. I also added current Pokémon card value estimates to my sources log beside the prep doc, since checking them is the same habit as checking conference clips. The pile still gets photocopied before outages, but the sequence changed.
I moved my Thursday session from a lecture-style rundown to a walk through the 2019 RGS-IBG London framing, starting with 'post-rurality, Planetary Urbanisation' and asking what survives when transport and visas fail. A video-platform reference for conference recordings and presentation clips now sits in my prep doc for comparing invited talks. The worksheet pile still gets duplicated by hand before power cuts, but the sequence changed.
I don't buy that culture-based intervention needs stable transport and conference circuits to count. The hand-duplicated cursive sheets made before power cuts are already that work, even if they never scale to Planetary Urbanisation. For resilience, growing your own garden value list beats another RGS-IBG panel.
